Dubbed by one critic as “Cage and Cunningham on steroids”, International Cloud Atlas is the latest release from the mind of Mikel Rouse. Rouse conceived this idea to accompany the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s eyeSpace and thought it would be a perfect homage to Cage and Cunningham to have everyone listening on iPods (set to shuffle, of course) as they watched the performance unfold. Says Rouse, “The sequence of tracks on this recording represents but one version of this composition. As with the dance performance, the sequence may be set to “shuffle” to yield a possible 3,628,800 permutations”.

John Rockwell of the New York Times said of International Cloud Atlas: “What was thrilling about hearing the music this way was how personal it was. We were all cocooned in our own worlds, hearing something different, just for us. “All the audience members have their own secret, their own special version,” Mr. Rouse was quoted as saying in Time Out New York. It was the purest realization of Mr. Cunningham’s chance aesthetic, the ultimate in intimacy”.

Lyrics

AMERICA’S SECRETS

We must protect America’s secrets
We must protect America’s secrets

Give me my property back
Give me my property back

HOW I STAYED BLIND

You’re not taking me where I know it’s free
You’re not taking me where I know it’s free

How I stayed blind in one lifetime
How I stayed blind in one lifetime

And I know it and you know it but we’re not there now and then
And I know it and you know it but we’re not there now

QUANDO ESTE LADO ESTÁ VAZIO

Quando este lado está vazio
Quando este lado está vazio agora
When this side is empty, when this side is empty now
When this side is empty, when this side is empty now

Todo o meu pesar
A minita vida toda

GAZA STRIP MALL (GET HAPPY)

Look who’s shopping in the Gaza Strip Mall
Look who’s shopping in the Gaza Strip Mall

That’s what happens when you get happy, get happy
That’s what happens when you get happy, happy again

When it’s not about you
Is that the woman from the place I’m going to?
Please tell me true, when it’s not about you.

GOVERN MY LOVE (QUASE PERDI MEU GARFO)

Almost lost my fork
But I didn’t lose my fork

Quase perdi meu garfo
Mas eu não perdi meu garfo

Will you govern my love today?

TWIN MINUTES

Twin minutes, twin minutes with you
Twin minutes, twin minutes with you

MY LOVE’S GONE REMIX

My love’s gone. It got all used up.
Now my love’s gone

COMO EU ESTIVE CEGO

Como eu estive cego
a vida inteira

How I stayed blind in one lifetime
How I stayed blind in one lifetime

E ev sei
E vc sabe
Mas a gente não está la agora
Mas a gente não está la

And I know it and you know it but we’re not there now and then
And I know it and you know it but we’re not there now

WHEN THIS SIDE IS EMPTY

All my sorrow all my life
All my sorrow all my life

When this side is empty, when this side is empty now
When this side is empty, when this side is empty now

CLARION HOTEL

I’m dyin’ in the water
I don’t know where the water’s gonna go

The keys on the table
The train’s out the door
The bottle of whiskey
We’ve been here before

The laughter and secrets
With time on our side
Has slipped away slowly
And shortened this ride

If living is dying
I’m dying with you
A notch on the bottle:
Forty one’s forty two

A kiss for a handshake
A clarion call:
That love is the winner
And winner takes all

I’m dyin’ in the water
I don’t know where the water’s gonna go

They’re leavin’ the morning
Clarion hotel
Mark and Liz are drivin’
I’m wishing in their well

The give without taking
The train asking why
The bottle of whiskey
They’re saying goodbye
