Note to readers: And often we miss the thing we wished for even when we got it. Maybe because it’s sitting in front of us and it was much easier to see it when it was a wish. And if you’ve had your fill of nationalism in this 2026 Workd Kup, you’re probably alone. And it’s also probably good to remember that nothing rises above politics except sport doesn’t. And it’s a good time to recall the memories: of interviews and learning to form sentences; the refinement of  20th century advertisement sponsored by Claude; the tourists who took Neil Diamond’s song too literally; the consistent unexpected looks on players as they’re checked, as if it’s the first time (along with crisis actor pain); imagining Mick Jagger (no judgement); the maniacal fan face (TM); the maniacal fan (for good measure). And in case you’ve been wondering, stoppage time is decided by the match referee. They track time lost during play by adding up specific events: roughly 30 seconds for every substitution, about 60 to 90 seconds for goal celebrations, the exact length of VAR reviews, time taken to treat injuries, and deliberate time-wasting. In other words: bullshit. And Messi hold baby and now Messi face baby: the kind of story that gapes the average. And the newest Kimi K3 model from Beijing-based startup Moonshot might make World Cup less global or kind of plastic, but at least open source.

And as Rip Torn is to Vanderpump Rules, so this gala spectacle from the Avenue of the Americas (so to speak) comes to its conclusion with Tom Cruise doing what he did best: talking, and the flags come out and about and the teams are on the move and taking the field and the children, always the children at New York/New Jersey Stadium (because in a ridiculous twist, FISA (TM) doesn’t allow advertising (Met Life Stadium) unless they get the money, brought to you by Gianni Intifada (TM) and the nationalist anthems and shake my money and rub us the wrong way and Adidas and Kalshi and bang the drum slowly (and has it really only been five weeks?) and the fashion show introduction of the gladiators and with an average ticket price of $11,327 for this World Cup final, this represents the largest fee ever to look at your phone in a stadium and Spain takes the ball and a turnover and ohhh so close for Spain  as Dani Olmo flicks in a pass to Lamine Yamal, his shot is deflected and saved by Emi Martinez and the geopolitical landscapes of Spain and Argentina under the current U.S. presidential administration present a sharp study in contrasts, where as  the socialist government of Spain has locked horns with Washington over foreign military policy, Argentina’s anarcho-capitalist administration has positioned itself as the White House’s premier strategic ally in Latin America (or nip and tuck) and header and header and dream baby dream and pop fly to corner kick (with VISA VISA VISA) and Lionel Messi has only touched the ball once so far with the Argentine fans national chorus and free kick and Spain thrives as the fifth-largest economy in the European Union with robust GDP growth, yet it suffers from severe structural stagnation and political gridlock that leave local citizens deeply anxious about the future and coach this and coach that and free kick for Spain and then free kick for Argentina and so happy together and a touch from Lamine Yamal for Spain and foul and now hydration break brought to you by Bank of America and Dove (one quarter cleansing cream) and Adidas and FOX Sports and back to celebrities all the time (actually copyright) and Hyundai and squeeze the ball and pop fly and owie and free kick for Argentina and fancy back kick by Spain and Argentinian President Milei successfully crushed runaway hyperinflation and generated a massive fiscal surplus, but this aggressive “shock therapy” simultaneously triggered widespread factory closures and mass layoffs for ordinary workers (the American plan) and foul by Spain and another foul and free kick for Spain and oohh almost in for Spain with a shot from Mikel (!) Oyarzabal and Argentine yellow card and Madrid fiercely protects its national sovereignty by denying the U.S. military the use of its strategic naval and air bases for Middle Eastern operations, which has caused relations to deteriorate so badly that Washington now openly brands Spain a “terrible ally” in a “pot calling the kettle black” approach and we’re approaching the half and Marc Cucurella has some rare space and fires in a low shot that is watched by Emi Martinez and better living through television and +4 minutes added to the half and run Forest, run and Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has pulled something and has to come off and Buenos Aires secured a powerful geopolitical footprint by buying American F-16 jets and petitioning for a formal NATO partnership, at the cost of surrendering control of the strategic South Atlantic to align entirely with American defense interests (good luck with that) and a minute to go in the first half and this half is over and in a Workd Kup first, we will have a Nap Time Show (TM) brought to you by Bank of America and Topps (seriously) and while many don’t support this Nap Time Show due to the potential of an overly long cool down period for the players, others question the talent (you’ll see) and fancy roller skates and sexy McDonalds never gets old for some folks and Muppets (maybe now Trump wakes up) and Boy Blands (TM) and football never looked so good with Just-an-actor (TM) and hallelujah this is almost over and dancing tax shelter with the Workd Kup theme song and the children, always the children and love (Muppets style) as we await the second half and as we wake up, for Spain, longstanding economic pillars endure via a foundational Bilateral Taxation Treaty that protects massive, continuous corporate investments, even as the White House threatens a total trade embargo over Madrid’s independent foreign policy and in Argentina, the country secured an unprecedented $20 billion U.S. currency swap lifeline and a massive tariff-dropping trade agreement, but this critical bailout was explicitly conditioned on Milei’s party winning its domestic midterm elections (hmmmm) and enjoying the zen of Coca-Cola and Jeep Wrangler and Quaker with the Ramones and the exhaustion of feeling totally alone in the world and we’re off in the second half of this FISA (TM) World Cup final and a shot on goal as Alex Baena cuts inside and hits one straight at Emi Martinez and the Nap Time Show (TM) took 10 minutes longer than FISA (TM) regulations allow and owie for Argentina to be matched by owie and fight (so much for the theme of Nap Time Show love) and Paredes gets a yellow card and why is Elmo fighting and thrilling moment for Spain stops being thrilling and punt and Spains Prime Minister Sánchez stands firm on global human rights by pushing for independent diplomatic paths in the Middle East, but this move has deeply fractured its alliances, making Spain the lone NATO dissenter against steep new defense spending benchmarks and Argentina has two more subs (!) left and Spain gets a free kick and my left foot and the Argentinian administration has earned immense favor in Washington by positioning itself as the premier U.S. strategic ally in Latin America, while simultaneously drawing intense global condemnation for publicly downplaying the atrocities of its past military dictatorship (if you dance to the music, don’t you know you’ve got to pay to the piper, ask your mama) and three’s company and Mikel Oyarzabal and Fabian Ruiz come off with Ferran Torres and Pedri on and corner kick for Spain and the Spanish government confidently upgraded its macroeconomic growth forecast to 2.6% despite regional supply shocks, even though this tech boom—fueled heavily by massive infrastructure from U.S. giants like Amazon and Microsoft—leaves Spain deeply reliant on American corporate capital while its leaders aggressively reject U.S. foreign policy and Lamine Yamal almost in for Spain and its Match Break brought to you by Will Ferrell, Home Depot and we’re back and hydrated and bottom or top and on come Facundo Medina and Giuliano Simeone for Argentina and Buenos Aires secured extensive bilateral commitments to jointly dominate the global lithium and critical mineral markets, but this framework explicitly forces Argentina to suppress domestic industrial subsidies and abandon state-led market protections to accommodate U.S. commercial terms (hmmmm) and Spain is successfully capturing a historic tourism boom of nearly 100 million visitors due to global travelers redirecting away from volatile zones, but this economic windfall is triggering immense domestic pushback and local anger over rising housing costs and gentrification (don’t get me started) and Dani Olmo and Alex Baena come off with Nico Williams and Mikel Merino on for Spain and oooh almost in for Spain and once again ooh ooh for Spain as Pau Cubarsi fires one in from range and is brushed away by Emi Martinez and the Milei administration rapidly diversified market access by executing the historic, fast-tracked Reciprocal Trade and Investment Agreement with Washington, yet the fine print heavily favors the U.S., binding Argentina to over a hundred mandatory regulatory changes while offering few parallel concessions and almost in again for Spain and yellow card for Fernandez and Messi having very little ball time and Spain has controlled the ball but can’t crack the goal and almost in again for Spain and again and again with Spain having 13 shots to zero for Argentina and 4 added minutes and a free kick for Argentina and in Spain, high-level political spats have not disrupted local autonomous regions from successfully maintaining lucrative U.S. data center expansions, yet Prime Minister Sánchez faces constant external anxiety as Washington repeatedly floats warnings of targeted, localized trade retaliation and Argentina rallies but it’s a no and Spain rallies and red card for Fernandez and Argentina achieved monetary normalization by lifting restrictive capital controls and transitioning to a managed float, which came at the price of submitting entirely to rigid, strict IMF-U.S. oversight that strips Buenos Aires of independent central banking powers and a fowl and free kick for Spain and almost in but Martinez is once again a brick wall and we’re out of overtime and going into netherworld time and for anyone chasing a dream, there’s WhatsApp and we’re starting overtime with a free kick for Argentina and in for Spain but a fowl so out for Spain and Martinez is down and the band played on and 3 added minutes for the half half (not the him half) and Messi sends a pass wide for Medina, who is just beaten to it by Porro and we’re at the end of the extra time for the first half half and starting the second half half the paint is nearly dry and Oooh Ooohhh it’s in for Spain by Ferran Torres and this game is 1-0 Spain and now it’s a keep-away game for Spain and Spain scores again but off sides so no and Messi faces and Merino is down and another free kick for Argentina with a minute left and no but a corner for Argentina +5 added minutes and again a corner and a miss and another free kick for Argentina and then free kick Spain and whatever: Spain for the second time in their history has won the 2026 Workd Cup and if the sadness envelope of the closing of these games leaves you empty, this land is your land, and if the world wasn’t altered or put on hold, and this land is my land, then the quality of lives didn’t change, from the California, where the haves and have nots rest side by side, to the New York island, through the wildfire haze, from the redwood forests, and the match-set-match of illborn injustice, to the Gulf Stream waters, the gargoyles of this moment and time will pass: this land was made for you and me.

2026 WORLD CUP
Norway vs England
7/11/2026
Note to readers: you can find all previous Mikel Rouse Sports Blogs HERE

Note to readers: Here’s a quick recap in case anyone was in a coma last week: Despite police blockades, dozens of Mexican fans gathered outside the England national team’s hotel until the early hours of Sunday morning, hoping to disrupt players’ sleep ahead of their World Cup round-of-16 match against co-host Mexico. It didn’t work. Also on Sunday, President Trump called Gianni Intifada (TM), the president of FIFA, on Wednesday and asked him to review the suspension of the United States’ top goal scorer in the World Cup, Folarin Balogun, after he was given a red card in the team’s match that night against Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to three people familiar with the conversation (take that birthright citizenship). On Sunday, FIFA reversed the suspension, announcing that Mr. Balogun would be eligible to play Monday against Belgium. The reversal is highly unusual and is the first time since 1962 that FIFA has allowed a player to appear in a game when they would have been suspended after being sent off in the World Cup. Mr. Infantino has spent years trying to curry favor with Mr. Trump. Last year, FIFA created and gave Mr. Trump the FIFA Peace Prize amid the president’s public, but failed, campaign to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Who said it’s all about the Benjamins? Also, it didn’t work.

“It is only when a mosquito lands on your testicles that you realize there is always a way to solve problems without using violence.” – West African proverb

And with this, we enter the last quarter final rounds with these gladiators from Norway and England at the last Beckham Call (TM) and Fox One which always gets it wrong so 4 minutes into this game and thanks for paint drying and waltzing Matilda and Norway and England have met 12 times previously, with this being their first meeting since a 1–0 friendly win for the English team in September 2014 and overall, Norway have won just two of those 12 matches, losing seven and failing to score in any of the last four and Verizon and Sorloth’s flick-on from a long-range Nyland punt is put back across the face of goal by both Schjelderup and Haaland in quick succession, but Stones is there again to head the ball clear of the danger area and Norway boasts a massive Government Pension Fund, commonly known as its sovereign wealth fund, which has eclipsed over $2 trillion and because the government legally restricts itself to drawing down just 3% annually for the federal budget, the country possesses a layer of extreme fiscal flexibility and economic resilience that almost no other nation in the world enjoys and celebrity to be seen with champagne and costs of the game and O’Reilly is played into open field and steps inside Ryerson’s challenge on his way towards the box, but Ajer slides in with precision to suck the ball away and Norway will look to counter (because, yea) and England has their first corner (!) and kick and don’t bother and move the ball

slowly and never forget your first and skippy skippy (TM) and Powerade and Ohhh almost as England is picking up the speed and header and Gordon cuts inside Ryerson to send another teasing delivery into the six-yard box, but Bellingham can’t quite reach it from his near-post run and Ajer heads the cross clear for Norway and patience is key and Match Break in South Florida (ugh) brought to you by Quickbooks, Caplyta (increased risk of death or stoke) and it feels like 101 temp-wise and we’re back before we know and rattle and hum and Norway misses and England free kick and no and adults and their influence on children and (notice the rowboat) smiling Nordic Shrek (TM) and take this job and shove it and sweet baby James and Ohhh but no and the gift of gab And following the UK’s departure from the European Union, the British economy has faced prolonged trade friction and although Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government signed a bilateral trade deal with the U.S. to reduce tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles, the Trump administration has threatened to renegotiate or dismantle the agreement and this persistent uncertainty leaves England’s manufacturing and export sectors highly vulnerable and Ohhhh Ohhh it’s a goal for Norway from Andreas Schjelderup and he’s feeling it and expressing it and this game has exploded with something like love eternal (or smoke rings) and catch me if you can and Fibonacci (hardly) and Aramco and despite its global reputation for human rights, Norway is currently locked in an intense diplomatic row with Washington and the U.S. government placed Norway on a list of nations accused of failing to properly curb trade in goods produced via forced labor, threatening Oslo with a punishing 12.5% tariff on Norwegian imports and Norwegian officials have strongly rejected the claim as entirely unfounded and kick turn turn and Pickford is forced into action once more as Sorloth passes inside to a freed-up Odegaard, who steps onto his left-footed and drills a left-footed (there’s Mick Jagger) strike goalwards which is held by the England keeper and I sometimes find the costumes confusing and a +4 to halftime and Ohhhh Oohhhh it’s a goal for England by Jude Bellingham (not Mick Jagger) and Ohhh Oohhhh in the blink of an eye it would have been a goal and it’s the half, brought to you by the new film Odyssey and Claude (and give me a break) and New Balance and Kalshi and Nation’s Dumbest (where do I start?) and Bank of America and despite political turbulence at the executive level, the fundamental defense and intelligence-sharing architecture between the U.S. and the UK remains incredibly deep (whatever) and the core military-to-military bonds, nuclear cooperation, and shared security tech continue to function as the primary anchor for transatlantic security, keeping England central to Western geopolitical strategy and lets see how that holds up and as Waymo says: humans are everything (?) and Will Farrell never miss a chance on love (ads) and Kansas City (full disclosure: this reporter has a history there) having a moment in this Workd Kup and we’re back after the half at this Workd Kup match with a 1-1 tie and we go to a free kick for England and Lenovo and kick and no and who shot J.R. and dance and digesting England by the pound and I share my ball, you share yours (seriously) and Ohhh almost something and kick and two different touches (!) and Ohhh Ohhhh it’s in for Norway as Torbjørn Heggem does a dandy kiss turn turn and Norway has successfully deepened its tactical value to the U.S. by tripling American troop and asset access under expanded defense agreements and by acting as a forward warning sensor and “homeland defense” shield against Russia’s Northern Fleet in the Arctic, Norway has solidified its status as Washington’s most vital northern ally but conversely, England’s relationship with Washington has hit a modern low over military autonomy as the UK government strongly pushed back against U.S. policies in the Middle East and initially refused to allow the U.S. to use British military bases for launching direct airstrikes against Iran and this refusal, paired with England’s delayed responses to American basing requests, has deeply strained confidence within the Pentagon and shaken the historic alliance but there might be a fowl and certainty expressions of great pain but wait (!) the goal is taken away from Norway because Budweiser Budweiser Budweiser and Nordic Shrek (TM) and shoot the moon and Ryerson is forced off with that injury as Norway’s right-back issues begin to mirror England’s, with Benfica utility man Fredrik Aursnes brought on to replace him (as if) and Norway’s universal healthcare system remains entirely insulated from international commercial pressures and the state-run system negotiates medicine prices directly from a position of absolute financial strength, completely blocking foreign pharmaceutical companies from inflating domestic medical costs and keeping public healthcare highly affordable for its citizens (take that USA USA) but conversely, England recently made massive concessions regarding its National Health Service (NHS) to secure its broader trade relationship with Washington (lie down with dogs your gonna get fleas) and under a newly brokered bilateral agreement, the British government agreed to double its NHS procurement spending on expensive, new U.S. pharmaceuticals from 0.3% of its GDP to at least 0.6% by 2036 as critics warn this commercial concession will funnel billions of pounds away from domestic hospital infrastructure directly into American pharmaceutical firms and bouncy so bouncy and we’re at Natch Break sponsored by Lenovo, Coca-Cola, Fox Sports (and apparently “unbridled joy”) and we’re hydrated and back for the love of life and first touch and keep the sweep and I love the dead and it remains to be seen how another scramble of England’s midfield will affect their attempts to get the upper hand in what’s becoming a real arm-wrestle of a second half and Nyland underhits an attempted wide pass, allowing Saka to cut it out, but the England winger can’t bring the ball back under control before his Arsenal team-mate Odegaard steps into the breach for Norway and Ohhh Oohhh it’s almost in for Norway but bouncy no and my love’s gone, my love’s gone and it’s the hope that kills you and Aramco (again) and header and on the economic and geopolitical front, Norway has successfully transformed itself into the indispensable backbone of European energy security and following the disruption of supply chains from Russia, Norway surged its natural gas exports to the continent and the UK, capitalizing on high global prices to fuel its sovereign wealth fund while cementing its strategic role as a stabilizing force for Western economic security and pop up and handball and don’t get me started and Verizon Verizon Verizon and work that body hurts nobody and Powerade and England just can’t stop finding red shirts whenever they avert danger in their own box, as Norway spread possession from right to left and it comes to Nusa, who takes on Saka, and successfully wins another corner when his cross is steered behind (!) and bring me grace and Ohhh Ohhhh truly nothing actually happened and Djed Spence enters the fray in England’s latest change, with the versatile Tottenham full-back filling in for O’Reilly on the left and shockingly, in early 2026, the administration imposed a 10% import tax on Norway and seven other European nations and this economic retaliation was triggered after Norway rallied around Denmark to oppose Donald Trump’s threats to seize Greenland so in June 2026, the administration further targeted Norway by proposing tariffs of up to 12.5%, utilizing an American assessment that claimed the Nordic country failed to curb trade in goods made with forced labor—a charge Norway strongly rejected as unfounded and for good measure (if you’re 8 years old) Trump publicly targeted Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in text communications, calling Norway’s decision-making regarding the Nobel Peace Prize “foolish” and explicitly stating he no longer felt an “obligation to think purely of peace” toward the nation and +7 is added to the clock (because why not?) and Bob’s your uncle and tired legs, tired minds and chase that ball, chase that ball “touch me, feel me”, and Heggem has gone down with cramp prior to a late throw-in being taken, potentially extending the stoppage-time period but giving both teams the possibility ro reset for one final push in normal time (and totally killing my buzz) and two owies but will it be a yellow card and no and game ends and we add (god help us) another 30 minutes (think early mid-century soap operas) which is a good time to appreciate  McDonalds, VISA VISA VISA, Bach (just kidding) and flip coins or crypto and huddle and cuddle and ADI and Hyundai and Budweiser and every man needs a woman (or not) and Ohhhh OoHH it’s a goal for England by Jude Bellingham, his sixth goal for this Workd Kup and color my world and this game is Norway 1 and England 2 and following disagreements over British domestic policy, U.S. President Donald J Trump threatened to reconsider and dismantle the 2025 Economic Prosperity Deal and this has placed the UK economy at risk of losing key tariff reductions on crucial export sectors like automobiles, steel, and aluminum and tense, direct pressure on NATO spending forced the UK to accelerate its domestic defense commitments to 3.5% of its GDP and to fund this sudden spike, the British government drastically slashed its own overseas development aid down to 0.3%, deeply straining the country’s domestic spending reviews and the administration has routinely attacked the UK government’s sovereignty, with said Trump calling British immigration and energy choices “insane” in public broadcasts and publicly predicting that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would be forced to step down (and with friends like this…) and were one minute to go into this first half of half (?) and wi feting if Mick is thinking time is on his side (game or not, it isn’t) and a break (think ‘Ads’) and we’re back for 15 minutes (don’t make promises that you can’t keep) and England free kick and multiple headers (!) and so many kicks and tries for England and 7 minutes plus stoppage time (because why not?) and never say never (ok, maybe sometimes) and the crowd chant before meaning and owie with a yellow card and I wish I cared about anything as much as these guys care about that ball and head to head collision and +2 and touch me, feel me and 60 seconds to go and back and forth and that’s the game and England moves to the semi finals and this aggressive heat of love (?) might remind you that you’re alone in this world, that the world owes you nothing and that you will be dust, but then, maybe if you’re lucky, you remember that you owe the world nothing as well, which offers an alternative : to live and give the world everything because you got to be here in this one and only time.

2026 WORLD CUP
America250 Edition
Canada vs Morocco
7/4/2026
Note to readers: you can find all previous Mikel Rouse Sports Blogs HERE

Note to readers: As NYC swelters in a historic heat wave with resources in limited supply, it’s a nice day to start again. It’s a nice day for a white trash wedding. And if you’re planning on offering a message of peace, maybe run it up the flagpole and see if it salutes. And on this Fourth of July, if you’re confused between America250 and Freedom 250 you’re probably not paying attention. And apparently don’t cover your mouth unless you’re coughing at these World Cup games. Last week the United States received a red card because forward Folarin Balogun was found guilty of “serious foul play” for stepping on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. But also of note, a 47-count indictment was unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, charging 14 defendants (Nine FIFA Officials and Five Corporate Executives) with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies, among other offenses, in connection with the defendants’ participation in a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer. The guilty pleas of four individual defendants and two corporate defendants were also unsealed today. And Palestinian goalkeeper Saleem Al-Ashqar was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the Al-Qarara area, northeast of Khan Younis, southern Gaza. He was reportedly attempting to secure a cooking gas cylinder for his family.

And as succulents need minimal water but sycophants in Freedom 250 need more juice, we enter this Round of 16 match (your guess is as good as mine) between Canada and Morocco on the 250th anniversary of an experiment winding down but partially hosting this Workd Kup while hosting cage fights and crypto grifting and redefining sport as we know it and every year for the past century, in Denmark, thousands of Americans and Danes come together to celebrate the Fourth of July but not this year given the sour taste provided by the USA USA as American officials have been cut from the program (and a brief moment to acknowledge #67 ranked Cape Verde and their gallant battle classic against reigning champions Argentina and the dream of the underdog without the Messi endorsement deals-congratulations) and this Canada team has to be aggressive with the defense against this Morocco team as these teams meet in Houston (condolences) and under a climate controlled roof (go figure) for these quarter finals brought to you by Hyundai and pacing and back and forth and steady chaos and a corner flag and swing and a miss and kick and header and 75,000 avid readers watch as these teams volley and Bounou is the busier of the two keepers in the early exchanges as Canada apply the pressure and Morocco have seized opportunity to reset with play from out the back following another cleared corner kick and Ohhh almost in for Canada and Canada has strong industries in tech, engineering, and natural resources that provide stable career paths for skilled workers and the public school systems and universities consistently rank among the highest globally for academic performance (take that USA USA) and Gianni Intifada (TM) here in attendance counting his coins and the ball is given up in the middle of the park where Ahmed intercepts it and threads a pass into Oluwaseyi who takes a dainty touch to turn his body goalwards and get a shot off and Diop launches a long ball to pick out Saibari who’s tracked closely by his marker but the forward is flagged offside and free header and no real pace and owie and this isn’t looking good for Morocco and in Morocco, local Berber and Arab cultures place immense value on welcoming guests with genuine friendliness and bustling souks showcase world-renowned handmade leather goods, intricate textiles, and beautifully detailed ceramics and we’re into a Match Break brought to you by Waymo, Ultra, Dick’s (!) and we’re back at this air conditioned stadium (only in Texas) and Morocco has their first shot and it’s a miss and we’re 32 minutes into this FISA(TM) Workd Kup and Canada are in action in their box yet again as they win another corner and Eustaquio delivers the cross and Morocco scramble to clean up (I know the feeling) and Mazraoui attempts to play out from the right but he’s slow and hesitant and Buchanan wastes no time racing in to dispossess him to set up yet another Canada attack and Ohh Ohh it’s a cat fight (among adults) and yellow card and Canada holds a massive percentage of the world’s renewable, clean surface fresh water, citizens enjoy robust legal protections, freedom of speech, and a highly stable democratic government (one can dream) and Canada has been the better team thus far but can they get a goal before the half and owie trip and 6 minutes added to this half and manager head shake and no one making headway since the hydration break (maybe wrong hydration?) and another caution and we are at 0-0, we are at the half sponsored by Jeep and Morocco is a strategic travel hub and proximity to Europe allows for quick, cheap ferry rides or short flights to Spain and France while strong bilateral ties with the U.S. mean the U.S. actively encourages economic investments into Moroccan-ruled territories as Washington has raised sharp concerns regarding Canada’s trade ties with China over critical technology minerals and frequent U.S. political rhetoric labeling Canada a “51st state” has deeply aggravated nationalist sentiments (go figure) and huge awkward ad by Gianni Intifada (TM) for himself I suppose and Allstate and Carnival Cruise and Bank of America and Coca-Cola and all the feelings it’s possible to feel and Chase and Nissan and Uber Eats and these teams are heading back to the field and what do you do with a problem like Morocco and we’re off and kick turn turn and kick turn turn and shirt pull and pop fly and Ooh Ooh it’s a goal for Morocco by Ounahi and in Morocco, dealing with government offices for visas or business permits involves endless paperwork and delays and inland cities like Marrakech experience scorching, exhausting summer temperatures that routinely top 40°C (104°F) (so imagine playing in air conditioning) and Canada trying to rally and ADI and McDonalds and never my love and somber Gianni Intifada (TM) (but why?) and Hakimi with his second assist at the tournament, tied for the most among defenders with Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella and speaking of this Canadian drive, massive geographic distances mean driving between major cultural hubs requires days, not hours and short winter days with minimal sunlight drastically impact mental health and energy levels and Buchanan makes a penalty appeal after he was shoved down by Halhal but the flag is up for offside and man-to-man press (!) and Talbi and Ambrabat are on for Bouaddi and El Khannouss as Morocco add fresh legs and Canada follow suit as Larin replaces Oluwaseyi and swingle and singer and owie and yellow card and a break for drinks (2nd chance is always a charm) brought to you by Quaker (Hey Ho Let’s Go [Ramones] seriously) and Canada looking for inspiration and a break and snowbirds in Houston (!) and header and howl and free kick and nervous Canada and tender-head-touch (TM) and might makes right and Ooh Canada almost in and header from Morocco and navigating daily life outside tourist areas requires fluency in Moroccan Arabic (Darija) or French and there’s domestic pushback over UN roles as U.S. and Moroccan hardliners attempting to dismantle the UN MINURSO peace mission risk sparking renewed local conflict and we have ten minutes to go in this ceremony and Oooh Oooh it’s Ounahi again for a goal for Morocco and while the U.S. administration heavily backs Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, as stated above, U.S. hardliners are aggressively pushing to dismantle MINURSO (the UN peacekeeping mission in the region) and formally label the pro-independence Polisario Front a terrorist organization with international policy experts warning that defunding the UN’s presence and banning the political opposition strips away the remaining diplomatic safety valves and by forcing an end to open-ended UN tracks, this high-pressure strategy risks shattering the frozen conflict and restarting active warfare, which could destabilize North Africa and draw Morocco and neighboring Algeria into a direct military confrontation and this Morocco team is feeling the grace and almost had a third goal but love is a burning thing and as Canada faces a likely defeat in this Round of 16 the U.S. administration officially declined to extend the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) during its required six-year review, effectively starting a 10-year clock to wind down the landmark continental free trade zone and this came right on the heels of the administration imposing universal tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automotive imports, alongside newly proposed 10% tariffs over forced labor tracking claims and combined with rhetorical friction—this decision has injected massive financial uncertainty into the Canadian economy, causing a projected 1.5% drop in Canadian GDP and adding up to $2,000 in annual costs for Canadian households and 2 minutes left in this clash and sad kicks and +8 and Morocco set to become the first African team to have back-to-back entry into the quarter finals and Canada pop fly and free kick for Canada and pop out and not to be for Canada and Oooh Ooooh another goal for Morocco by Rahimi in the last minute and and this game is over on the 4th of July in USA USA and with this win on this day I’m reminded that in 1987, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall delivered a speech responding to the two-hundredth anniversary of the United States Constitution and in the speech, Marshall argues that the celebration of the Founders can obscure the origins of later movements that brought the country closer to its promise to deliver liberty and justice saying “I do not believe that the meaning of the Constitution was forever ‘fixed’ at the Philadelphia Convention, nor do I find the wisdom, foresight, and sense of justice exhibited by the Framers particularly profound. To the contrary, the government they devised was defective from the start, requiring several amendments, a Civil War, and momentous social transformation to attain the system of constitutional government—and its respect for the individual freedoms and human rights—that we hold as fundamental today. When contemporary Americans cite the Constitution, they invoke a concept that is vastly different from what the Framers barely began to construct two centuries ago.”

2026 WORLD CUP
Côte d’Ivoire vs Norway
6/30/2026

And with the Workd Kup knockout bracket (your guess is as good as mine) set, we begin with this Round of 32 (see above) and in this corner we have Côte d’Ivoire, boasting one of the largest and most rapidly growing economies in West Africa, acting as a regional hub for trade, finance, and investment and in that corner we have Norway, a country that consistently ranks at the top of the UN’s Human Development Index where citizens benefit from free universal healthcare, subsidized higher education, and generous parental leave (which might mean they won’t be hosting a World Cup anything soon) and as we try to escape the clatter of folks from New Jersey to Kansas City griping about how they were robbed by this Workd Kup (it’s not a flaw, it’s a feature) we find ourselves in Dallas (my condolences) and they’re off with the kick and the bounce and a pop fly and slow-mo replay for no discernible reason and ten toes up, ten toes down and Haaland’s header is blocked and you’d think Gianni Intifada (TM) would at least spring for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and another opening for Ivory Coast as Heggem stretches to divert a low cross behind for a corner (!) and swing low and Norway is world-famous for its deep fjords, dramatic mountains, and pristine air and through the Allemannsretten (Right to Roam), everyone has the legal right to hike, camp, and forage in the wilderness freely but Norway is one of the most expensive countries globally, where groceries, dining out, and alcohol are notoriously pricey, largely due to high taxes and import duties (which might account for all the camping and foraging) and Kessie looks to play the ball in behind for Bonny to run onto, but it’s just too heavy (and not his brother) and more musical chairs without the chairs and Ivory Coast have a corner thanks to Diomande and brought to you by DoorDash and VISA VISA VISA and as these teams go round and round it feels a little like apartment hunting in San Francisco and Diomande, Pepe and Doue almost gives Ivory Coast a chance at a goal and it’s hydration break time and time to unleash your senses with advertising (I guess) and we’re back and Motorola and long fly ball and these teams are serious as a heart attack and as the world’s largest exporter of cocoa beans and a major producer of cashews and palm oil, Côte d’Ivoire generally maintains a strong agricultural surplus but despite being a major economic center, nearly 40% of the population lives in poverty and there are stark economic disparities between the urban hub of Abidjan and rural areas (so bring your game on!) and kickoff and header and mama swung pretty good and a counterattack from Ivory Coast ends with Pepe’s cross just floating too far in front of two teammates in the box (!) and man-bun goalie stops the ball and nothings brings folks together like war sport and some wild Norway lip action and header almost in and blocked and Ohhh Ohhh yippity and it’s a goal for Norway, brought to you by Powerade and a block and Sorloth came within a yard of scoring his header from the resulting corner and a yellow card owie (as that infernal Coldplay adds to the Yellow National Anthem (TM)) and four minutes have been added on to the end of the half (but who’s counting) and after some give and take we are (mercifully) at halftime where we won’t waste a minute to tell you about Harry Potter, McDonalds, Valvoline, Minions, Coke, Polymarket, Butterfinger, and of course FISA(TM) and as the heads give us a halftime recap, it’s of interest that Ivorians are widely known for their friendliness and warm hospitality where the local music (like Coupé-Décalé), street food scene (such as the famous garba), and arts are lively and engaging and the economic capital, Abidjan, is often called the “Manhattan of Africa” due to its gleaming skyscrapers, modern amenities, and bustling urban lifestyle (one man’s bustling is another man’s hustling) and while Norway is one of the safest countries in the world, with low crime rates and high levels of interpersonal and institutional trust where it is not uncommon to see children walking to school alone or leaving items unattended the society can feel heavily conformist due to Janteloven (the Law of Jante), an unwritten cultural law that discourages boasting, standing out, or acting superior to others and this can sometimes make it difficult for visionaries or highly ambitious professionals to thrive (sign me up) and Fanduel and Lay’s and we’re back and huddle (and most likely pray) and can Ivory Coast find an equaliser as they struggle against this formidable Norway team and pop fly and cross-ballet kick as Doue fizzes a ball across the box, but there’s no orange shirt there to attack it and an opening for Norway as Odegaard pushed forward and good save from Nyland and happy fan (like, really happy) ’cause he caught a ball and French is the official language of Côte d’Ivoire which makes doing business, traveling, and navigating public services highly accessible to French speakers and while Abidjan is well-developed, rural areas often lack reliable access to basic services like clean drinking water, electricity, and sanitation and as the country continues to recover from past civil wars residual issues—including land disputes, ethnic tensions, and occasional unrest during election periods—remain and the smell of sweat in this bar gives one the idea of being in the playing field and kick and header and bouncy and Bonny and Inao Oulai are off and Amad Diallo and Wahi are on and Ivory Coast Header (TM) and Ivory Coast are pushing now and you feel we’ve entered a crucial phase of the game (I suppose) as Odegaard’s corner is met by Heggem but his right-footed effort is blocked on the line by Amad as we hit a Match Break brought to you by Home Depot and Powerade and Dove and Verizon (and if it feels like you’re not buying enough stuff, make a note) and paint your wagon and Sorloth and the scorer of the game’s only goal, Antonio Nusa, have gone off and three-way-pileup (TM) and Ooooh Oooh it a goal for Ivory Coast from Amad the super sub and this team has a renewed vigor and in Norway, the gians generally work a standard 37.5-hour week with generous vacation time and overtime is often discouraged in favor of personal time, family, and outdoor activities (take that tech bros) and nearly the entire population speaks excellent English, making it relatively easy for tourists and expats to navigate daily life while learning the local language (the break you make) and owie as Amad is down and Pedersen has been replaced by Aursnes for the remainder of this game and in Côte d’Ivoire, traffic accidents are a major concern due to poorly maintained roads, overloaded cargo trucks, and aggressive driving while traveling outside major cities at night is highly discouraged and there is an ongoing security and terrorism risk in the northern border areas linked to regional instability in the Sahel and medical and emergency services are quite limited outside major cities, and facilities frequently face shortages of basic medicines and supplies and Oooooh it’s a goal by Haaland  for Norway as it creeps across the line and depending on where you live in Norway, the winter months bring very little daylight (and complete darkness in the Arctic Circle), combined with freezing temperatures, rain, and snow and breaking the ice (pun intended) can be difficult as Norwegians have a reputation for valuing their privacy and can be quite introverted so that making deep, local friendships can take a significant amount of time (and again, sign me up) but traditional Norwegian food relies heavily on preserved meats, fish, and potatoes, and the grocery store selection of fresh, ripe produce can be limited depending on the season and fast food culture is rising, with much of the supermarket stock being processed (looks like I’ll need a co-signer) and a frantic scramble and they’ve added 7 minutes to this thing and the disbelief on some of the players faces as if they’ve never done this before and an owie and the anger of sportsman like conduct and free kick and bounce off and the tears and this game is over with Norway winning 2-1 and these sons of fathers and daughters of dusters and reality TV show lives wandering in and out of a dream as if the constant distraction will save them, save us all, but the moment has shifted and we will all be dust slip sliding away.

2026 WORLD CUP
USA vs Australia

It’s an onslaught of sport in NYC as the Knick’s win the NBA title and city pride swells. Soon after the win, tens of thousands of people filled the streets and the rowdiest among them were clashing with police, smashing windshields, scaling scaffolding, light poles and a statue, climbing into and atop school buses in Times Square and trying to hitch a ride on a moving fire truck. A 17-year-old was shot near 42nd Street and Broadway, police said. Bystander video captured the sound of at least seven shots and showed people crouching and running for cover. Police took the victim to the hospital because an ambulance could not get through the crowds, police said. A gun was recovered and three people were taken into custody. And I guess that’s acceptable collateral damage and on with the Workd Kup coverage!

And if religion is the opium of the masses, then sports is surely the meth and as we gear up for this motion match between USA USA and Australia, fans have flooded social media with complaints about tickets that never arrived, orders that were canceled at the last minute and hours they spent trying to sort out problems between FIFA’s (FISA(TM)) ticketing system and outside resale platforms and the rowdy drunk tourists all singing their Oasis National Anthems (TM) in tired unison  brings us to this USA USA vs Australia dive bar with the unity formations (including helicopters) and high five and low five and these teams are off and Australia have the first chance after a poor pass from the USA is intercepted by Toure and an owie for USA USA and pink as you please and the increases back and forth of paint drying and all of a sudden it’s GOAL for USA USA and the EPA initiated the rollback of the 2009 “endangerment finding” and delayed critical methane emission regulations for oil and gas infrastructure and additionally, the administration withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement for a second time and significantly delayed clean energy projects  and both teams seem testy now and USA USA kicking into the crowd and something resembling stalking and this USA USA team is feeling the pluck but almost in for OZ and Australia consistently ranks near the top globally (e.g., placing 4th in global indexes) for its excellent overall quality of life, environmental standards, and outdoor lifestyle and the nation is ranked second globally for its healthcare system, largely buoyed by its universal Medicare access and a scuffle or two and USA have just had a great chance after Sergiño Dest made a flick down the right side and Velupillay wins it back but it’s given away again, with Toure getting back to interrupt the USA passage and time from a word from our sponsor Fanduel and back to this standing room only (meaning the teams on the field) and USA USA kicks it off and holding hands, making all kinds of plans and I’ll show you my jersey if you’ll show me yours and Harpo-look-alike is scrappy for this USA team and USA in almost but outside the line (which sounds sadly familiar) as the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implemented stricter “budget neutrality” oversight on state Medicaid waivers, effectively limiting states’ ability to design expansive healthcare pilot programs and a header for USA USA and its a GOAL with USA at 2 and OZ at zip but the Australian government has tightened migration numbers, making long-term residency and visa approvals significantly more competitive and complex which begs the question: where have all the flowers gone and almost in again for USA and another break brought to you by Verizon like a night of mixed martial-arts cage match brawls on the South Lawn of the White House, with bloodied competitors battling it out in front of the president, vice president, and other leaders of the country and the administration finalized rules transferring senior civil service positions into a new excepted category, making it easier to remove federal employees without the opportunity for appeal as they announced plans to scale back workplace safety and minimum wage requirements while Australia boasts one of the highest minimum wages in the world and has driven its gender pay gap down to historic lows and despite some softening, the broader employment landscape over the past few years has maintained impressive job creation and VISA halftime and whatever you do, start ‘em young with Rexona and these teams are back and a  couple of subs for the Aussies and it’s Geria, Metcalf and Irankunda in for Burgess, Veupillay and Toure and USA USA drives the ball and the Department of Education largely relocated oversight of student civil rights and special education programming to the Department of Health and Human Services without congressional consent and an Aussie is down for the dandruff and a yellow card (should have maybe been a green card as the Australian government has tightened migration numbers, making long-term residency and visa approvals significantly more competitive and complex) and another man down for OZ and almost in for Australia and the interchangeable players and Killer Queen or Queen Bee depending on your age and a USA USA header that goes nowhere and Match Break brought to you by Lonova which gives us a second to ponder the USA USA administration’s advanced efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), effectively halting critical humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and global health initiatives (!) and Powerade through it and this Australian team is struggling to break out and referee lecture and Berhalter in for Pepi who was the Pulisic replacement at the start of the game and the Australian government has introduced landmark protections, including the world’s first systemic age limit mandate on social media, to safeguard adolescents online and the country is seeing a massive surge in privately funded investment in renewable energy, positioning it to take advantage of global shifts toward clean energy and massive Aussie header that goes nowhere and this USA USA is steampunking its way to victory and settle this bet, the one with the legs and Scally and Trusty off for Dest and Robinson for some fresh legs coming in for Poch in the final minutes and a kick over the heads and Metcalf with a great ball across the area from the near side and no one was waiting on the back post to get on the end of that delivery and the USA USA administration enacted the largest deregulation in U.S. history (take that Ronald Reagan!), targeting emissions standards, energy efficiency rules, and scientific review processes as Australia faces a reckoning with this dominating USA USA team and if the results hold this USA USA team will advance to the knockout round but either way, Australia faces the persistent threat of severe weather shifts, including El Niño conditions that dramatically increase the risk of droughts, extreme heat, and bushfires and as a highly integrated economy, Australia remains heavily exposed to international shocks, including fluctuating global oil prices and shifting foreign policies (think the Strait) and kicked into the stands and stand your ground and a +6 and roll yer own and referee getting foot massage (and booze?) and the game winds and winds and a couple of headers for good measure and this game is over and as the group think gives way to the troop think, we once again wrap our minds around the salt ‘n’ pepper of world sport, an eyeliner of sorts, a slight breeze that becomes a tsunami and reminds us that anything is possible, from love and security, friends and family, to death and destruction-but death and destruction are assured.

2026 WORLD CUP
Mexico vs South Africa
6/11/2026
Note to readers: you can find all previous Mikel Rouse Sports Blogs HERE

Welcome back the MR Sports Blog after a hiatus that involved a pandemic, a lawsuit concerning underage weebles (weebles wabble but they don’t fall down, apparently) and eight years of growing old gracefully. It seems that the stalwarts of WORKD KUP didn’t pause in 2022 but my bet is that the themes and variations probably haven’t changed that much (except for Peace Prizes) and that readers can expect a smooth transition from 2018 to these 2026 transformative but undersold games. Also of note is that AI (Artificial Indulgence) is being tested and trolled in the blog and might result in less then accurate sports reporting (assuming anyone could possibly tell). May the force be with you. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

And the red, green and blue and the Triumph of the Shill (TM) and the children (always the children) singing their hearts out (presumably about advertising) as these 2026 Workd Kup FISA games open in Mexico City as North America welcomes the world which makes Mexico not building that wall probably a good thing and here’s the toin coss and quick to huddle and this stadium holds 80,000-plus passionate readers and once again they’re off and it’s kick turn turn and two down for a minor owie and Mexico gets a free kick or something and no go and then scramble and almost in and goalie kiss the ball and make him cry and chesty (TM) and Quiñones scores for Mexico (brought to you by Lonovo) and South Africa hasn’t found their footing as yet and USAID funding cuts to South Africa have devastated public health networks, caused massive job losses among community health workers, and severely disrupted crucial HIV/AIDS, TB, and educational programs while the sudden freezing of foreign aid has resulted in clinic closures, dangerous treatment interruptions, and the dismantling of years of preventative care, which I guess fans ‘should chill’ about as well and second yellow card (brought to you by Powerbreak) and South Africa gets a free kick leading to a commercial break to advertise these FISA games and Rudy Giuliani’s son has somehow weaseled his way into the USA USA part of these games and once you’ve seen one Giuliani you’ve seen ‘em all I guess which is probably as good a time as any to mention that referee Omar Artan was denied entry into USA USA in keeping with the spirit of a shared humanity of these FISA games and again, I guess fans ‘should chill’ and a quick criss cross of legs and Mbokazi for SA almost but no cigar and tens of thousands of demonstrators, including teachers, judges, and families of victims of cartel violence, have flooded Mexico City to protest during the start of the FISA World Cup and protesters are demanding pay raises, better pensions, and more government action in addressing tens of thousands of missing persons and, you guessed it: ‘chill’, and dance with the one that brung you and Mexico keeps up the pressure and Quinones finds himself at the center of the action, placing a low shot towards the bottom corner (your corner or my corner?) and the South African Parliament has confirmed that the investigation into President Ramaphosa’s alleged misconduct—stemming from a 2020 farm theft scandal—remains active under the Impeachment Committee, following a Constitutional Court directive that might be on the minds of maybe 20 folks in the Estadio Azteca (Latin American Spanish:[esˈtaðjo asˈteka]) and a missed Mexican goal as we head into halftime and analysis sponsored by VISA and still no mention of the FISA Peace Prize but I’m betting Mr. Gianni Intifada (TM) will be gouging fans long after most readers are long gone and these teams of titans are back and Williams for SA almost snakes a boo boo in this event seizure of a game and free kick for Mexico and the USA USA and Mexico are experiencing a highly volatile diplomatic period (putting it mildly) following fatal security incidents involving USA USA federal agents on Mexican soil and President Claudia Sheinbaum has demanded explanations and firmly warned Washington and USA USA envoys to refrain from interfering in Mexican internal politics and good luck with that and Modiba fouls Fidalgo on the edge of his own box (!) and Mexico have another pony style free kick and boxes of bubbies as the SA team tries to get its bearings and the SA government’s crackdown, which has included the mass repatriation of hundreds of Nigerian nationals, has sparked severe pushback and Nigeria has threatened retaliatory measures over alleged xenophobic violence against its citizens as Themba Zwane replaces Jayden Adams for SA and the haircuts seem tamer than previous Workd Kup games and what the hell is Rexona and the glittering diamond shapes and FISA REWARDS and OH OH Jiménez from Mexico hits a header from very close range to the bottom left corner (again, which corner) and it’s now Mexico 2, South Africa 0 and if that doesn’t call for a FISA promo I don’t know what does and a quick shout out to 17-year-old Gilberto Mora of Mexico who entered the game just before that last goal and the administration in Mexico continues to battle drug cartels, with Mexican military forces engaging in deadly operations against top cartel leadership but drug-related violence and U.S. pressure over fentanyl trafficking remain massive points of friction between the Mexico and USA USA and this continued jostle of tears for fears and no spot kick for Mexico and the fan disapproval comes through and substitutions for both teams and I push you, you push me, we both push too easily and a jump ballet move and there might be a party in Mexico City tonight and apparently there’s a FISA WAR ROOM (let’s not commence) and I thought you said Spider, I’m ok and there’s a red card and these ads remind me that I miss Lays chips and hippity hoppity (asshole’s on his way) and the scramble here as the clock ticks and a miserable time for this SA team and some overtime added as an injury or two will do that and I gotta get me a red card and that’s the game and as this Mexico teams anticipates tearing up the town and this South African team wonders what went wrong, one can’t help but think of the times, day after day, that you walk down the street and see people passing by with their thoughts and concerns and try to imagine the deeper connection between humans that could exist but clearly doesn’t, probably won’t, the sad senseless grind.
